After a long trip from Detroit, Michigan, Stanley finally made it to Cairo, Egypt! My friend Crystal was his host. After California, Stanley visited my friend Jeana in Arkansas, a state in the south of America. This is what she said:
Hi Everyone! My name is Jeana Moore, and I live in a very rural part of Arkansas. Rural means it's far away from big cities and out in the countryside. Flat Stanley and I had lots of fun. We had 2 days of adventure, so he could see a couple places I enjoy most in our area. People don't really live near each other here, so you have to travel around 30 to 45 minutes to get to a town! However, it doesn't seem so long at all for us because we are used to it. Two of my favorite things to eat in Arkansas is steak and catfish! Beef cattle and catfish are two of our big agricultural products that many people buy from our state. (Chicken and rice are probably the biggest, however.) Stanley had some catfish and fries and really liked them. The first adventure Stanley and I had was at the White River in Calico Rock. In the past, when people started moving West (maybe for the Gold Rush), Arkansas had many trading stations because our rivers were a great way for people to travel to other trading stores. You can still see the railway where trains still sometimes run. There are lots of local craft people now who sell stuff to visitors. The White River is a major place for people to fish and canoe and just enjoy nature. Next Flat Stanley and I went to the Mammoth Spring State Park! It is amazing! The water comes from one of the biggest springs in the entire world! It is always cold, even when temperatures are much higher than 100 degrees in the summer. The Mammoth Spring State Park is also where they make electricity! In some of the pictures, you can see Stanley outside of the old electric station. That room is now a museum because they created a new power plant. The Mammoth Spring Park also has a fish hatchery, paddle boats, and lots of other things you can explore during the summer. Also, since we live in a rural area, we can have unusual pets, like ducks! The last thing Flat Stanley and I did was go to work. I work for a radio station, so he got to be on the radio during the news! It was great to meet your friend Stanley! Now he will have many other wonderful adventures in Korea. After New York, Stanley went to my friend Paul in France and spent a whole Saturday with him. These were their adventures in Montpellier, a city in the south of France.
A FLAT STANLEY SATURDAY Stanley and I took a 3-minute walk to the market on Saturday. We took a selfie (01) along the way. We walked under the Porte de Peyrou, also known as the Arc de Triomphe. It was built in 1693 and was dedicated to King Louis XIV (he's the king with the palace in Versailles, which is not too far from Paris). In fact, the entire Peyrou Park (02) was dedicated to him! You can see the statue of Louis in the middle of the park, which at that time was the highest point in all of Montpellier. Louis XIV liked himself a lot and didn't want anything higher than his statue to be built. You can also see the water castle in the background, and more closely in the next photo (03). You can also see the 17th century Saint-Clément Aqueduct to the left. It goes through Les Arceaux ("The Arches") part of the city. The aqueduct was used to bring water from the St Clément spring 14 km away. Peyrou Park is my favorite place in Montpellier. It’s peaceful, even though it is in the middle of town. It feels like everything good about Montpellier comes together here, and you can see far into the distance. The Cévennes mountains peacefully lay in the distance to the east and the west. You can see the sea to the south. And sunsets are always a treat. Everyone brings their dogs in the evenings after work, and they go swimming at the water castle. There are antique markets on Sundays, where they sell very ancient things. Everyone you pass looks happy because it seems like they understand what a special place it is. The market is in Les Arceaux, set up in between the pillars of the aqueduct! I always try to go there every Saturday, even if I don't feel like it, because I know that I’ll feel better afterwards. It’s a way to connect myself with the life of the city. The people that go there appreciate eating good, healthy, local food. I feel more alive when I eat the fruits and veggies that grow from the ground close to me. Farmers bring their harvests, bakers bring their breads, collectors bring their books and old coins, and buskers fill the air with music. You can also find street food, like farçous, curçous and chichous (04)! They come from the Aveyron region, just northwest of Montpellier. They are similar to veggie burgers and fried in a giant pan. Each one tastes different: farçous are made from chards, chichous are made from chick peas, and curçous are made from curry and apples! The greens (cheaper than the supermarket) come from a farm right outside Montpellier. For dessert, we had the most delicious home-made macarons from a lady who also teaches people how to make them (05). Stanley ate his raspberry macaron in one bite! We took a nap after lunch. From my bed, you get a great view of the St. Anne church, built in the 1800s. It’s no longer a church; it’s an art museum now! Stanley wanted to get a photo of himself floating in front of the window (06). It looks like he’s going to stay in Montpellier and train to be a magician! Stanley finally made it to San Francisco, California!! My friend Autumn lives on a commune, which is a community of people who share all of their belongings, and they share all the work and responsibilities. The first picture is of Stanley having a community potluck (he's very small and sitting in the back). A potluck is when everybody makes a dish. The second picture is what he is eating at the table (avocado with an egg in the middle). In California people like to eat healthily, so that's why Stanley also had a Greek yogurt and kambucha, a kind of tea. Yoga is also very popular in San Francisco, so Stanley took a yoga class, and because he is a great helper, he helped to clean up the props afterwards. The next day he helped cook some bacon for his American brunch (breakfast + lunch)! If you are not Muslim or Jewish, it's ok to eat pork (pig)!
After St. Louis, Stanley went to visit my friend Jen in New York. She took him to a lot of places!
1.Stanley arrives and has a snack, an Italian cookie called a pizelle 2. Stanley goes with me on a walk at a trail in Rosendale, NY. The trail runs between Kingston and Gardiner, NY. It's 22 miles long and used to be a railroad. 3. Facts about the Rosendale Trestle, which used to be a railroad bridge. It was the highest span bridge in the U.S. in the 1800s. Now it is a bridge you can walk over. 4. Stanley looking at all the sights on the trail 5. Another view of the trail 6. I am finishing my visit to Detroit, Michigan. After a very long journey from our classroom in Nablus, I found myself on the streets of Detroit. Once here I met my very good friend John. John said he'd be my host while I visited Detroit. John asked if I had ever been to Detroit, MI before. I told him this was my first visit to Detroit, and the United States "America" as well. At that moment John decided to take me on a great adventure in the city he calls home. After such a long journey I was very hungry. John suggested we have his favorite food: sandwiches. Oh boy, we had a lot of sandwiches. We finished them all. I was very, very hungry after my long trip. We then went to see a great monument in Detroit, John's favorite, The Spirit of Detroit. We could see the incredible Renaissance Center, across the street from the Spirit of Detroit. The Renaissance Center is Detroit's tallest building and is home to the corporate office of auto manufacture General Motors. Afterward we went to see the fountain on Belle Isle. Belle Isle is an island park in the Detroit River. We then went to a special spot in the park where you can see two countries separated by the Detroit River. Detroit is across the river from Windsor, Ontario in Canada. To get around the city, John made sure I had a jacket (Ziploc bag). It was cold and windy sometimes. John also made sure I had a quarter (coin) to ride the bus (which also helped me from flying away in the wind) around the city. The best fun was yet to come. After the food and visiting the awesome sights, John took me to see a Baseball Game. Baseball is "America's Greatest Past Time." Everybody loves baseball here. Detroit's team, The Detroit Tigers, played the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Detroit Tigers won the game. It was a really great time. I got to meet John's friends and they were wonderful. My time in Detroit has been great. I am now off to my next adventure: Egypt! Stanley finally made it to my city: St. Louis in Missouri!! My friend Lina took him to a famous ice cream place called Ted Drewes. Then she took him to the beautiful Botanical Gardens, where they have flowers from all around the world. Keep checking this for more pictures! |
